Brother Richard H. Hilditch Western Reserve Lodge #507

WARREN - Richard H. Hilditch, 84, formerly of West Farmington, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, at St. Joseph Warren Hospital after a short illness.

He was born on Halloween, Oct. 31, 1941, in Cleveland, to Ralph S. Hilditch and Dorotha M. Hunt Hilditch.

Richard bravely served his country in Vietnam. Upon returning home from overseas, he married the love of his life, Ann.

The couple initially lived in Cleveland before deciding to move to the country, where they ultimately purchased a farm in West Farmington. After retiring from General Motors, following more than 30 years of dedicated service, he devoted himself to the life he loved most - farming the land he called home.

Filled with an adventurous spirit and a stubborn streak that could make a mule jealous, Richard lived life to the fullest, meeting whatever came his way with quiet resilience and a steady, nonchalant calm. He remained ornery and true to himself until the very end. When asked how he was doing, he often replied that he was "sparkling," and when asked how he was feeling, he would simply answer, "with my fingers," a reflection of his unmistakable humor and individuality. He was immensely proud of his daughters and the successful careers they built, never missing an opportunity to brag about them.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Ann Hilditch, whom he enjoyed torturing with his unauthorized (and some may say unnecessary) tractor purchases, his penchant for watching Westerns at full volume and his enduring passion for collecting coins.

He leaves behind his cherished daughters, Mandy Thiry (Jack Pico) and Shellie Burgin; and his grandchildren, Rachel Pico (Dr. Stephen Notzl), Zach Hilditch and Zane Thiry.

Additionally, he leaves behind his sister, Dr. Nancy (David Staat) Alexander; his favorite cousin, Anna; nephew, Ben (Maria) Alexander; and nieces, Alexa (DL) Stone and Heather Flowers.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Jimmy Hilditch.

Friends may call 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026, at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 5 p.m. Pastor Jim Dittmar will officiate.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home. Friends and family may view Richard's obituary and send condolences at carlwhall.com.

In the early 1990s, his career transitioned to public service, beginning with a four-year term as a Naperville Township Trustee. He ran and was elected to serve as the supervisor of Naperville Township in 1993. He was re-elected in 1997, 2001 and 2005, serving four consecutive terms.

Porter played a key role in regional planning as a member of the Implementation Team for the DuPage Area Transit Plan and as a contributor to the Pace Suburban Bus Service Citizens Advisory Board. He was recognized in 2003 by the DuPage Center for Independent Living for outstanding commitment to the Americans with Disabilities Act and he received the "Ramp-Arts" Award from the City of Naperville mayor's advisory commission on persons with disabilities.

Upon retirement in 2009, Porter was recognized for an extensive career in public service by the 96th General Assembly of the State of Illinois.

While in Warren, Porter was active in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Shiners and the Scottish Rite. He was a Mason for 56 years, initiated, passed and raised initially through the Carroll F. Clapp Lodge No. 655 in Warren, Ohio, in 1969.
